Chapter 1
IN THIS LESSON
1. Sensory Needs
Many autistic people have sensory processing differences, meaning environments can feel overwhelming or uncomfortable. The NDIS can help by funding sensory supports and adjustments.
🔹 Examples of Sensory Accommodations:
✔️ Quiet spaces to go when overwhelmed
✔️ Dimmed lights or adjustable lighting options
✔️ Noise-canceling headphones or earplugs
✔️ Breaks during activities to avoid sensory overload
✔️ Soft clothing options or alternative uniforms
✔️ Choice of seating (e.g., sitting near an exit, in a low-stimulation area)
💡 NDIS Support Options:
• Funding for sensory tools, such as headphones or weighted blankets
• Support workers who understand sensory regulation
• Help with environmental modifications (e.g., lighting, soundproofing)
