Chapter 1
IN THIS LESSON
2. Communication Needs
Not all autistic people communicate the same way. You might process spoken words more slowly, prefer written communication, or use alternative methods to express yourself.
🔹 Examples of Communication Accommodations:
✔️ Written instructions instead of spoken directions
✔️ Extra processing time before responding
✔️ Visual supports (e.g., social scripts, picture-based communication)
✔️ Alternative communication tools (e.g., text-based apps, AAC devices)
✔️ A support person to help with appointments
💡 NDIS Support Options:
• Funding for speech therapy or communication tools
• Support workers who use affirming and accessible communication
• Training for teachers, employers, or therapists to use inclusive communication styles
